NEW PROGRAM AIMS TO PRODUCE GENETICALLY SUPERIOR CARABAOS
12-January-2005 Manila Bulletin

The government is set to implement a project to propagate genetically superior buffaloes.

To undertake the project titled "Propagation of Genetically Superior Water Buffaloes Through Embryo in Vitro Production and Embryo Transfer Techniques" are the office of Senator Ramon B. Magsaysay Jr., the Bureau of Agricultural Research and the Philippine Carabao Center.

Sen. Magsaysay, BAR Director Nicomedes P. Eleazar and PCC Executive Director Libertado C. Cruz have signed a memorandum of agreement for the implementation of the project.

The office of Sen. Magsaysay and BAR will provide P3 million each to underwrite the project's implementation. Both offices will also be involved in the monitoring and evaluation of the project.

Moreover, BAR will constitute an evaluation team that, in coordination with PCC, will set up the monitoring and evaluation system for the project.

The PCC, whose main office and research complex are situated in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, will be responsible for the orderly, systematic, and timely implementation of the project.

It will provide technical experts and support staff responsible for the mass production of superior genetic embryos (fertilized eggs) through in vitro (outside the animal's body and in an artificial environment) embryo production and embryo transfer (the carabao to a recipient of surrogate mother carabao) to complete its gestation or development.

PCC will also facilitate the selection of recipient buffaloes and transfer of in vitro-produced cryopreserved (deep frozen) embryos to qualified surrogate mothers.

It will likewise monitor the breeding and development of riverine calves with superior genetics. Moreover, it will assist farmer-recipients in forming dairy cooperatives, train them on milk and calf production, and assist them in developing their own dairy and meat enterprises.
