22-TON CORN YIELD FEAT IN THE US
05-January-2006

Even in diverse growing conditions, Pioneer® brand corn hybrids demonstrate consistent superior yield performance over other hybrids.

In the recently concluded National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) Corn Yield Contest, US farmers planting Pioneer® brand corn hybrids won 23 of 27 categories on the national level in 2005 with Kip Cullers of Purdy, Missouri standing out as the highest yielder in the competition. Cullers planted Pioneer hybrid 31N28 and obtained a weighed yield of 22 metric tons per hectare. He won in the national Irrigated category.

The second highest yield in the NCGA contest was won by David K. Hula of Charles City, Virginia, who planted Pioneer hybrid 33M54 with a yield of 21 tons per hectare in the national A No Till/Strip Till Non-Irrigated class. The third highest yield was posted by Mezera Farms in Bagley, Wisconsin, with Pioneer hybrid 34N42, yielding 21 tons per hectare in the national AA Non-Irrigated class.

The NCGA Corn Yield Contest is an annual national competition among corn growers with the goal of producing the highest yields. Growers compete in nine corn production classes, including non-irrigated (A and AA), no-till/strip-till non-irrigated (A and AA), no-till/strip-till irrigated, ridge-till non-irrigated (A and AA), ridge-till irrigated and irrigated classes.

Back home, Filipino farmers who use Pioneer® brand hybrids also enjoy the consistent, high yield performance even in challenging growing conditions. While other hybrids post 5 tons per hectare yield even in ideal growing conditions, Pioneer hybrids give farmers as much as 10 tons per hectare. A significant testament of this fact is the experience of Carlos “Caloy” Guevarra of Mexico, Pampanga who got an average yield of 10.25 tons per hectare from his 10-hectare farm. This experience consequently earned him a National Gawad Saka Award for Outstanding Corn Farmer.

“The success stories of our corn farmers, both local and international, affirm the success of Pioneer in effectively sharing not just the right but more importantly the best corn hybrids and technologies that are highly suited in various growing environment,” said Pioneer Hi-Bred Philippines Country Manager Jet Parma.

Pioneer Hi-Bred Philippines, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of US-based Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.—A DuPont business – is the country’s leading producer and distributor of high quality hybrid seed corn.
