BIOTECH FOOD PRODUCTS SAFE, EXPERTS SAY
14-March-2005 Manila Bulletin

Top US food and agricultural experts say Washington is willing to help the Philippines become prosperous through the safe propagation and commercialization of biotechnology products.

David Miller, agricultural counselor at the US Embassy told participants in a food safety seminar conducted by the US Embassy at the Shangrila Makati that the US role is now focused in helping developing nations become self-reliant and prosperous in the field of agricultural biotechnology.

He said the US has been strictly enforcing biosafety guidelines to ensure that the technology is safe for human consumption and harmless to the environment.

"The US government has always been transparent in making available information on biotechnology tests and field trials available to the public," Miller said. "This process allow us to gain public trust by making them direct policy participants to ensure that the products would be safe for human and animal consumption.

Visiting microbiologist Dr. James Maryanski, biotechnology coordinator for the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the US food and Drug Administration (USFDA), said that the USFDA has been enforcing strict regulatory guidelines to ensure that food and medicine delivered from biotechnology are safe to the minuscule.
