GREENPEACE, LAWMAKER SLAM ARROYO FOR SUPPORTING GMOs
13-Feb-2002 Daily Tribune

An environment group together with Filipino consumers and Marikina City Rep. Del de Guzman yesterday expressed their disappointments on President Arroyo's failure to act on their call  for the labeling of genetically modified organism (GMOs) food products widely sold in the Philippines.

The Greenpeace Asia expressed its dissatisfaction with the Chief Executive's full support to genetic engineering.

De Guzman recently filed House Resolution (HR) 406 directing the committees on ecology and health, to conduct an investigation in aid of legislation into the uncontrolled entry of GMOs into the country and their reported massive use in food production.

"By ignoring calls to label GMO-contaminated food, the President is effectively giving green light to American biotech companies to go ahead and experiment with the health of Filipinos," Beau Baconguis, genetic engineering campaigner of the Southeast Asia, said.
