the Philippines

Rice Black Bugs (RBB) are cryptic
and invasive sap-feeding insects now widespread throughout
the Philippine agricultural landscape. Yield loss during
outbreaks ranged from 25% to total crop loss, all attributed
to Scotinophara coarctata (F.). Farmers have relied
mostly on chemicals to control the pest. This seminar
offers a systematic review of Philippine RBB populations,
along with information on the biology and ecology of
the insect. Myths and misconceptions that have led to
the mismanagement of RBBs are uncovered. Factors that
affect mitigation are also presented.
