Referring to intensified 'non-chemical
agriculture' characterized by overgrazing, irrigation, and polluted
water that has damaged natural systems, Dr. Brian Johnson of the
English Nature, stressed to his audience at SEARCA that "we need
more food but not more of this type of agriculture. We need to
use every tool in the toolbox."
The seminar "Assessing Environmental Risks from GMOs -
Experiences from the UK" was held at the SEARCA Umali Auditorium
on 3 February 2005. It aimed to share the views of a conservation
scientist from Europe on future directions in agricultural biotechnology.
The seminar was conducted in collaboration with the National
Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).
Over 200 individuals attended the seminar composed of people
from the academe (students and faculty), scientific community,
industry, government institutions, church and environmental
NGOs.
