Media,
Messages & Metaphors: How Philippine Newspapers Define
Agri-biotech
The 3rd in the series of
biotech communication booklet published by ISAAA, it synthesizes
the key findings of the research titled 'Print Media Reportage
of Agricultural Biotechnology in the Philippines: A Decade's
(2000 - 2009) Analysis of News Coverage and Framing authored
by Dr. Mariechel Navarro of ISAAA Global Knowledge Center
(KC); Jenny Panopio of SEARCA BIC; Noel Amano and Donna Bae
Malayang, both former staff of ISAAA (KC). The study underscores
the relationship between science and media and the process
of negotiating public or popular images of science. It analyzed
media coverage, sources of articles, tone, media frames, use
of metaphors, and article titles. The research paper is accepted
for publication in the Journal
of Science Communication.

Communication
Challenges and Convergence in Crop Biotechnology
The book presents case
studies that offer unique and rich examples of how countries
have been able to guide through the 'drama' of crop biotechnology
as they shepherd innovations from the laboratory, greenhouse
trials, multi-location trials, and hopefully to farmers' fields.
This is co-published by ISAAA and SEARCA.

Communicating Crop Biotechnology: Stories from Stakeholders
This book, published by
the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech
Applications, features 49 collective stories from 14 countries,
and was written by 19 authors from ISAAA’s Global Knowledge
Center (KC) and the Biotechnology Information Centers (BICs).
It highlights well-documented stories from different stakeholders
on the benefits of crop biotechnology and the ways by which
the ISAAA’s global knowledge sharing network responded to
their need for accurate, and science-based information on
crop biotechnology.

Bridging the Knowledge Divide:
Experiences in Communicating Crop Biotechnology
This handbook aims to highlight
the strategies and approaches in communicating crop biotechnology
that the Global Knowledge Center on Crop Biotechnology (KC)
and Biotechnology Information Centers (BICs) have evolved
from their vast experiences as well as knowledge-base available
in science communication. Hence, the handbook while primarily
meant as a guidepost for the network of BICs, can also be
used by other institutions interested in science communication
in general, and biotechnology communication in particular.
This publication hopes to contribute to bridging the knowledge
divide that limits stakeholders from benefiting from proven
technologies and scientific advancements due to the lack of
planned and deliberate communication initiatives.

The Socio-Cultural Dimensions of
Agricultural Biotechnology in the Philippines
This country monograph
on the socio-cultural dimensions of agricultural biotechnology
in the Philippines is a collaborative study by communication
researchers from the International Service for the Acquisition
of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) and the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It addresses the need for published
research focusing on key stakeholders in agricultural biotechnology
in developing countries. Specifically, the study seeks answers
to the following questions: a) What do stakeholders generally
know or understand about agricultural biotechnology? b) What
are their views and opinions about the impact and role of
biotechnology in their lives? c) Where do they obtain information
and what kind of information do they get? and d) Who do they
trust or have confidence in to tell the truth about biotechnology?
This monograph is co-published by ISAAA, SEARCA and the University
of the Philippines College of Development Communication.

the findings of a study on potential alternate host plants
of Asian corn borer that was conducted by Dr. Merdelyn Caasi-Lit,
University Researcher at the Institute of Plant Breeding of
the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). The results
were obtained from a survey in 3 major corn growing areas
in the Philippines, namely, Bukidnon, South Cotabato and Isabela.
These potential alternate host plants may serve as natural

this brochure says that more Trichogramma (a miniature flying
insect highly beneficial to corn & other plants in controlling
pests) and other natural enemies of the Asiatic corn borer
(ACB) were found in Bt corn plants suggesting that Bt corn
is not harmful to natural enemies of ACB.
